GTA 6 Online: Is There Multiplayer at Launch?

Rockstar has framed GTA 6 as a single-player experience at release. There is no confirmed multiplayer mode available on day one.

This is a genuine departure from expectations rather than a technicality. GTA 5 shipped with GTA Online arriving two weeks later; GTA 6 has no announced equivalent date.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy told Bloomberg at Tokyo Game Show that GTA 6’s multiplayer component launches "next year" — 2027 — following what he described as extensive talks with Rockstar. This is the most specific public timing estimate to date for a GTA 6 online mode, though it comes from Twitch, not Rockstar or Take-Two directly, so it should be read as a well-connected outsider’s estimate rather than an official date.

Separately, at Take-Two’s September 17 Annual General Meeting, CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that the existing GTA Online (the GTA 5 version) will continue to be supported "after GTA VI release and beyond" — meaning the current GTA Online is not being shut down or replaced at GTA 6 launch.

Almost certainly, and now with a rough public timing estimate attached (2027, per Twitch’s CEO) even though Rockstar itself has stayed silent on a date. GTA Online generated revenue for over a decade and remains commercially central to Take-Two.

The realistic expectation is a post-launch rollout, potentially a year or so after release, giving Rockstar time to stabilise the base game first. Treat any specific calendar date more precise than "2027" as invention until Rockstar says otherwise.

Plan for a roughly 80-hour single-player campaign with no co-op or competitive component. If you were intending to play with friends on release night, that is not on the table.

It also means the account-selling market has nothing to attach to. Modded account storefronts exist because GTA Online has persistent progression worth buying. Without an online mode, there is no progression to sell — another reason pre-launch account offers are fiction.
